Since 1980’s, Professor Kirk Smith has been coming to China for many times to make investigations and present his lectures, and we put the efforts together to assist the massive poor villagers in the

countryside to improve their traditional household kitchen stoves and cooking ranges, so as to increase the energy efficiency and reduce the consumption of stalks, firewood and coal that can protect the forest resource and improve the environments in the sites, and even more improve the indoor air quality and the health conditions to the people. The hard work has been engaged in more than twenty years and as a result the peasants in the countryside all have had their high-efficiency and energy-saving stoves and modern cooking ranges at present time.

Most of the unforgettable, early in 2005, Kirk had given us his valuable advice and supports to insist us on the test sampling with PM2.5 other than PM10 for the indoor air quality improvement verifications in the project that we were carrying out, the Sino-Dutch Co-project: Promotion of Rural Renewable Energy in Western China. As you know, this event was at the first time taken place even in the whole China and his suggestion has elevated the project implementation level for the understanding of public health improvement on account of the indoor air quality and the atmosphere pollution.

We will miss him forever and cherish the memory with longing for his kindness and assistance.
